terms

The agreement,
on one page.

Two parts actually matter: your files stay yours, and the voice model comes with restrictions you take on when you use it.

This End User License Agreement is between you and CHANGES WORK LTD, a company registered in England and Wales (“Changes”, “we”, “us”), the maker of IKI. Installing or using IKI means you accept it. If you do not accept it, do not use the app.

1. What you may do with IKI

We grant you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable licence to install and use IKI on Apple-branded devices that you own or control, subject to the Usage Rules in Apple’s Media Services Terms and Conditions. Everything not granted here stays with us: you may not sell, rent, sublicense or redistribute the app, and you may not reverse-engineer or decompile it, except where applicable law expressly permits it despite this restriction.

2. Your library stays yours

We claim no ownership of and no licence to anything you write, save, record or import. Your notes are files on your device. We have no account system and no copy of your library; what leaves your device, and only when you ask, is listed on the privacy page at iki.place/privacy, which forms part of this agreement.

IKI is not a backup service. Keep your own copies of anything you cannot afford to lose — the files are plain markdown and you can copy them out at any time.

3. Share pages

When you deliberately publish a collection, that page is hosted by us at share.iki.place. You are responsible for what you publish: you must have the right to publish it, and it must not break the law or this agreement. We may remove a page that does. Pages can expire, and you can revoke one at any time.

4. Pro, payments, and your own API key

Subscriptions and one-time purchases are sold by Apple through the App Store. Billing, renewal, price changes and cancellation are handled in your Apple Account settings, and refunds are Apple’s to give. A lifetime purchase means for as long as we operate IKI.

If you supply your own Anthropic API key, that traffic runs between you and Anthropic under your agreement with them. We never see the key or the requests, and we are not responsible for that service, its cost, or its answers.

5. The voice model and the restrictions that come with it

IKI can download an optional voice model — Supertonic 3, made by Supertone Inc. — to read your library aloud. That model is not ours. It is licensed under the BigScience Open RAIL-M License, a copy of which is delivered with the model and hosted at iki.place/licenses/supertonic-openrail-m.txt, and it is subject to the use-based restrictions in paragraph 5 and Attachment A of that licence.

Those restrictions are reproduced below and are an enforceable term of this agreement. In this section, “the Model” means Supertonic 3, any model derived from it, and the audio it generates. You agree not to use the Model:

  1. In any way that violates any applicable national, federal, state, local or international law or regulation;
  2. For the purpose of exploiting, harming or attempting to exploit or harm minors in any way;
  3. To generate or disseminate verifiably false information and/or content with the purpose of harming others;
  4. To generate or disseminate personal identifiable information that can be used to harm an individual;
  5. To generate or disseminate information and/or content (e.g. images, code, posts, articles), and place the information and/or content in any context (e.g. bot generating tweets) without expressly and intelligibly disclaiming that the information and/or content is machine generated;
  6. To defame, disparage or otherwise harass others;
  7. To impersonate or attempt to impersonate (e.g. deepfakes) others without their consent;
  8. For fully automated decision making that adversely impacts an individual’s legal rights or otherwise creates or modifies a binding, enforceable obligation;
  9. For any use intended to or which has the effect of discriminating against or harming individuals or groups based on online or offline social behavior or known or predicted personal or personality characteristics;
  10. To exploit any of the vulnerabilities of a specific group of persons based on their age, social, physical or mental characteristics, in order to materially distort the behavior of a person pertaining to that group in a manner that causes or is likely to cause that person or another person physical or psychological harm;
  11. For any use intended to or which has the effect of discriminating against individuals or groups based on legally protected characteristics or categories;
  12. To provide medical advice and medical results interpretation;
  13. To generate or disseminate information for the purpose to be used for administration of justice, law enforcement, immigration or asylum processes, such as predicting an individual will commit fraud/crime commitment (e.g. by text profiling, drawing causal relationships between assertions made in documents, indiscriminate and arbitrarily-targeted use).

Two of these have everyday consequences worth spelling out. Synthesised speech must be disclosed as machine generated wherever you place it — IKI labels it in the app, and if you export or publish that audio, the disclosure has to travel with it. And a synthetic voice must not be used to impersonate a real person without their consent.

If you pass the Model on to anyone else, you must give them a copy of its licence and impose these same restrictions on them in an enforceable form. Breaking this section ends your right to use the Model, and we may stop serving it to you.

The rest of IKI does not depend on this model: the app also reads aloud with Apple’s built-in speech, which carries none of these terms.

6. Open-source components

IKI includes open-source software: GRDB, SwiftSoup, Yams, MarkdownUI and the RevenueCat SDK, and — if you turn on the Supertonic voice — ONNX Runtime and Supertone’s sample inference code. All of it is under the MIT or Apache 2.0 licences. Each component stays governed by its own licence, and where that licence conflicts with this agreement, it wins for that component. The list, with a link to each licence, is in the app under Settings → Legal → Licences.

7. No warranty

IKI is provided “as is”. To the maximum extent permitted by law we disclaim all warranties, express or implied, including merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose and non-infringement. On-device AI writes summaries, tags, transcripts and answers that can be wrong; treat them as a draft, not a fact. Nothing here removes consumer rights that your local law does not allow us to exclude.

8. Limitation of liability

To the maximum extent permitted by law, we are not liable for indirect, incidental, special or consequential damages, or for lost data or lost profits, arising from your use of IKI. Nothing in this agreement excludes liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, for fraud, or for anything else that cannot lawfully be excluded.

9. Apple

  • This agreement is between you and Changes only, not with Apple. Changes alone is responsible for IKI and its content.
  • Apple has no obligation to furnish any maintenance or support for IKI.
  • If IKI fails to conform to any applicable warranty, you may notify Apple, and Apple will refund the purchase price. To the maximum extent permitted by law, Apple has no other warranty obligation whatsoever with respect to IKI, and any other claims, losses, liabilities, damages, costs or expenses attributable to a failure to conform to any warranty are ours alone.
  • Changes, not Apple, is responsible for addressing any claim by you or a third party relating to IKI or your possession and use of it, including product liability claims, any claim that IKI fails to conform to a legal or regulatory requirement, and claims arising under consumer protection or privacy law.
  • If a third party claims that IKI infringes their intellectual property, Changes, not Apple, is solely responsible for the investigation, defence, settlement and discharge of that claim.
  • You represent that you are not located in a country subject to a U.S. Government embargo or designated as a “terrorist supporting” country, and that you are not listed on any U.S. Government list of prohibited or restricted parties.
  • You must comply with any applicable third-party terms of agreement when using IKI.
  • Apple and its subsidiaries are third-party beneficiaries of this agreement and have the right to enforce it against you.

10. Ending it

Your licence ends if you break these terms, and it ends whenever you delete the app. Your files are unaffected either way — they are yours and they stay on your device.

11. If this changes

We will post any new version on this page with a new date, and announce material changes in the app before they take effect. Continuing to use IKI after that means you accept the new version.

12. Law and contact

This agreement is governed by the law of England and Wales, and the courts of England and Wales have jurisdiction over any dispute — except where the law of the country you live in gives you the right to bring a claim there instead.

Questions, complaints and claims go to CHANGES WORK LTD, 71–75 Shelton Street, Covent Garden, London WC2H 9JQ, United Kingdom, or [email protected].
